About the Black Tuesday Jazz Band

The Black Tuesday Jazz Band has entertained audiences throughout California and Nevada since the early 1990's. Black Tuesday’s leader, Hal Needham, continues to hold to his original promise, “trad to swing, fun music is our thing”. This formula has kept the Black Tuesday Jazz Band busy at jazz societies all around California and carrying the Dixieland banner to less familiar audiences in casual settings and club engagements.

Black Tuesday’s smooth and unique style of New Orleans and traditional jazz and swing has, since 1997, earned them long time participation in the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee where they have packed the popular venues at this festival.

Since their early years, this talented group of eight musicians has worked on improving their unique style and sound by varying the instrumental mix. In 2005 the substitution of bass Sax for the tuba, used in most Dixieland bands, gave Black Tuesday their current unique sound. Black Tuesday performs rollicking renditions of your favorite good-time tunes, as well as some of the great music from Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Clyde McCoy, Hoagy Carmichael, in addition to original jazz tunes written by the late Dan Bohline. Besides the unique instrumental sounds, Black Tuesday has one of the top Divas of Sacramento, Suzanne Wiggins, who captures audiences singing favorites from Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday and Muriel Lane. This entertaining band provides a variety of high energy jazz whenever good-time music is a must.

The Black Tuesday Jazz Band is available for bookings at clubs, parties, concerts, festivals, and other events where good-time, high-energy jazz music is a must.
